How to Attract Hummingbirds

How to attract hummingbirds

The Hummingbirds are arriving here in Maryland. I saw one in the garden today in my azaleas. Here is how I create a welcoming environment to attract Hummingbirds.

How to Make Homemade Nectar
It's real simple and cheap to make your own nectar for your feeder.

Ingredients
2 cups water
1/2 cup white sugar

Instructions
Bring water to a boil and stir in sugar. Cook until sugar dissolves.
Allow solution to cool before filling your feeders.
You may refrigerate the solution for up to one week.

Tips
Fill your feeder half way. Check daily for a week to gauge how much solution you need.
Clean out your feeders once a week. Toss out leftover sugar solution and refill with fresh solution.
Place feeders in a shaded area. This will help prevent the solution from fermenting.
Do not use dyes or any other types of sweeteners they are harmful to Hummingbirds.

Add a Pretty Hummingbird Feeder
Hummingbird feeders can be yard art. I think they are so pretty. You can buy one just like mine on Amazon for $14.95 here: Perky-Pet Antique Glass Bottle Hummingbird Feeder-16-Ounce Capacity

Azaleas and Honeysuckles
As soon as my Azaleas bloomed the Hummingbirds arrived. I also have a native honeysuckle that is beginning to bloom. The honeysuckle vine continues to flower until late fall.
Later this spring I will be planting Butterfly Bushes and Morning Glories which are also favorites of the Hummingbirds.

The only hard part is capturing a picture of these fast flying little birds!
